This was a harsh sentence. Though he deceived Augusta National Golf Club he never actually stole money from anyone. He just used an ingenious method to corner tickets in the Masters Ticket lottery. I won a practice round ticket several years ago. Would I be upset over this, probably but I also know that ticket brokers are doing the same thing but legitimately. Ticket brokers can enlist thousands of people through connections and pay them a small bonus for winning the tickets. They turn around and sell the tickets at a huge profit. Say you hire a grandmother who knows nothing about sports. You just tell her if she wins a pair of tickets you would give her $200. This guy applied using a bulk mailing list and created false ID's like utility bills to change the address when he won. The person whose account he created knew nothing. I especially like if somehow the tickets ended up in unsuspecting hands of the person whose name he used he would call them and say it was mixup on eBay. The profits were so huge he could afford to lose some tickets by mistakes.
